As a practicing, conservative evangelical Christian, I often find these reports disturbing as well. They have their roots in what we refer to as the prosperity Gospel, a viewpoint that God wants us to experience health, wealth and the absence of suffering. This is not supported by an orthodox reading of the Bible, especially the New Testament. God can and does heal and sometimes acts in this world in supernatural ways, but in the Bible this is very rare and the New Testament proclaims God’s concern over our spiritual health above all else. I recommend The Insanity of God by Nik Ripken for a better perspective on this subject.
